I've been slowly sorting through stacks and stacks of music, giving away what I'll never use again, and sometimes small treasures pop up in the stacks.
I found these old harp strings, a memory from the past. The harp that my parents rented for the beginning of my journey had these strings: C was green, F was closer to purple than black, and everything else was red.
When the harp we ordered (arriving 4 1/2 years after the order was placed), it was strung with the current system, most of the strings white and C now red.
I remember making the switch with no effort, but years later, there was a harpist in an orchestra pit with my husband on a opera gig. She still used this old system and in the darkness of the pit, she struggled seeing her strings. The orchestra ended up hanging a white sheet on the wall behind her to help her.
Our new system is truly easier in all kinds of light. The light and dark contrasts make it easier to see, at a glance, where our hands need to fly.
